I try not to throw the baby out with the bathwater regarding Jesus of Nazareth. However, I have some difficult issues regarding the religious abuse of the message of a man, who you so rightly point out, demonstrated nothing but love. One writer who has helped me bridge this gap is Paul Ferrini, through his series Reflections of the Christ Mind.
